The Inspector General of Police Solomon
Arase, has disclosed that the Nigeria Police
Force (NPF) had spent over N600 million on
the procurement and maintenance of foreign
dogs in the last few years, The Nation
reports.
According to Arase, so much was being spent
on the importation of these dogs from foreign
countries that rarely adapted to the country’s
policing objective.
However, speaking at the inauguration of the
Police Dog Breeding Centre and Ultra-Modern
Mounted Troop in Abuja on Thursday, March
10, Arase said: “This is certainly not
sustainable in the face of the current
dwindling resources.”
Addressing newsmen at the event, Arase said
that the procurement and maintenance of
foreign dogs’ project was funded within the
budgetary provisions of the Force Animal
Branch.
Arase said the force animal branch, which
was built to aid the police acquire capacity to
locally breed police dogs, had remained
underutilised in the past. At such, the force
continued to rely on importation of dogs and
other animals for its operations.
The IGP called for the effectively utilization of
the force, which according to him, would
save the nation some foreign exchange that
would have gone into procurement of dogs
from foreign countries.

He noted that the facilities at the Mounted
Troop Unit in Garki which was established for
the purposes of fighting crime and ceremonial
duties in 1982 were no longer fit for those
purposes due to age long neglect and limited
budgetary attention.
However, Arase said the new Force Dog
Breeding Center has the capacity to
coveniently breed and supply police dogs to
the entire West African Sub-region, as it can
produce well over 200 dogs per year. The IGP
added that the construction of the Dog
breeding Centre was conceptualised to aid
the Nigeria Police acquire capacity to locally
breed Police Dogs and be self reliant in dog
breeding.
He said: “It is projected that at optimal
breeding capacity, it can produce well above
200 dogs per year.”
IGP Arase also says that the establishment
of the facilities are part of the well thought
out long term strategies aimed at restoring
police primacy and aligning policing in
Nigeria to best global standards.
Speaking after, Abdulrahman Dambazau, the
minister of Interior commended the police
leadership for its visionary stance, noting that
the dog breeding center will be of huge
benefits to the nation in the fight against
terrorism.
Dambazua says the dog centre will help the
Nigeria Immigration Service in detecting and
preventing crime in Nigeria’s over five
thousand kilometers borders.
The minister also opined that the center will
support the employment drive of the Buhari
Administration, as some civilians expertise
might be needed to champion the idea.
Meanwhile, Solomon Arase has presented a
cheque of N10million to the families of 20
policemen who lost their lives in active
service.
According to Leadership, the policemen who
died while fighting insurgency in the
northeast including Bauchi, Borno, and Yobe
states respectively were compensated
through their next of kin.
